I wanted to make a simple yet classic poncho for late fall and early winter.  Fun fact, even though I've lived in New England my whole life, I rarely wear a coat. Instead, I'm always on the lookout for great-looking alternatives, things like ruanas, wraps, and ponchos. Enter the Canterbury Poncho. It kept me warm during our last November trip to Martha's Vineyard. It was perfect for walking on the beaches, sight-seeing, shopping and even going out for dinner.

The Yarn!

For this project, I used Red Heart Soft, a medium-weight category 4 acrylic yarn. It’s incredibly soft and comes in a wide range of colors, making it perfect for this poncho. I prefer working with acrylic yarns because they are easy to care for, being wash & dryable. If you prefer other fibers, feel free to use your favorite medium-weight yarn in any color you love. The key is to create a piece that will be worn, not one that stays hidden in your closet.

Construction

The best part about this poncho is if you can crochet a rectangle, you already have all the skills needed to make this! No shaping needed. The herringbone stitch gives the poncho a subtle pattern, and because it uses a larger hook it has a beautiful drape.

Customization

Add your own unique touches.  Starting with the colors you choose, from deeper jeweled tones for a classic look to brighter colors for a more playful modern twist. Tassels or fringe can take this from classic to boho. You can also adjust the length and width to suit your style.
