Cozy, Simple, and Stylish: The Champlain Shrug Crochet Pattern

Living in New England, even in June, the weather can be unpredictable. One day might start out warm and sunny in the 80s, only to drop to the cool, damp 60s by evening. That's why layering becomes our best friend! One of my favorite layering pieces is a shrug—a wrap or scarf with sleeves. It doesn’t take up much space in your bag, so it's always handy when the clouds roll in and the temperature dips.

The Yarn
For this pattern, I used Lion Brand Pound of Love—a true workhorse yarn that’s soft, and generously sized. With over 1,000 yards per skein, you only need one to complete this project! It’s made of 100% acrylic, making it easy to care for and durable enough for everyday wear.
Plus, Pound of Love comes in a wide range of beautiful colors, from soft neutrals, to lovely pastels, to bold jewel tones, so you can easily tailor your shrug to match your personal style or seasonal palette.

Construction
If you can crochet a rectangle, you can make this shrug—seriously, it’s that simple!
The entire piece is worked flat as a large rectangle using a beautiful herringbone stitch and a larger hook. Once you've finished crocheting, a few strategic seams transform it into a cozy shrug with relaxed sleeves. The clean, minimal construction makes it the perfect project to work on while binge-watching your favorite show or crocheting on the go.
This pattern is ideal for newer crocheters who want to make their first sweater but are nervous about shaping and sizing. It’s equally satisfying for experienced makers who enjoy a relaxing project with a beautiful result.
Customization
Want to make it your own? There are plenty of ways to customize!
Prefer a tweed look? Try Lion Brand Heartland yarn.
Want a longer shrug? Simply add more rows.
Prefer shorter sleeves? Shorten your beginning chain.
Play around with different yarns or hook sizes for a looser or more structured fit.
For extra warmth in late fall and winter, try a soft wool blend. If you're making a spring version, a lightweight cotton yarn works beautifully.
