This past fall, we took a much-needed vacation to Cape Cod. If you’ve never experienced the New England coast in late fall, let me tell you—it’s breathtakingly beautiful, but the cold wind off the ocean is no joke! While the scenery was perfect, I found myself without a hat to shield me from that biting chill. Adding to my dilemma, my crochet bag only held projects already in progress, and I hadn’t packed any extra yarn.
What’s a crocheter to do? A quick stop at the craft store later, I was back in action. Out of necessity and inspiration, the Falmouth Beanie was born! This hat has become a fall and winter staple for me, and I’m excited to share the pattern with you.

The Yarn
The Falmouth Beanie is designed with simplicity and versatility in mind, making it easy to pair with various yarns. For my version, I used Loops & Threads Charisma. This yarn is a dream to work with—it’s super soft, chunky, and comes in an array of gorgeous colors that fit any style. Even better, the pattern only uses one skein, which means it’s as economical as it is cozy.
I’ve also made this beanie with Premier Serenity Chunky, and the results were just as lovely. Don’t forget to check your measurements as you go to ensure a perfect fit!

Construction
The Falmouth Beanie is a joy to crochet because of its simple yet effective construction. The hat is worked flat, which means you don’t have to worry about managing rounds or complicated shaping. Once the piece is complete, it’s seamed and gathered at the top, creating that classic beanie shape we all love.
If you’re a beginner, this pattern is perfect for building confidence with chunky yarns and larger hooks. And the best part? Thanks to the thickness of the yarn and the straightforward design, you can whip up a finished hat in about an hour. It’s a quick, satisfying project that makes an excellent gift or last-minute addition to your winter wardrobe.

Â
Customization
Part of the Falmouth Beanie’s charm is how easy it is to make it your own. For my version, I added a faux fur pom-pom for a touch of modern flair. However, you can customize your hat to suit your preferences:
Pom-Pom Options:Â You can skip the pom-pom altogether for a clean, minimalist look, or craft one from yarn in a matching or complementary color. The choice is yours!
Color Play: Let your creativity shine by experimenting with different colorways. Go for a classic solid, playful stripes, or even a gradient effect if you’re feeling adventurous.
Sizes for Everyone: The pattern includes instructions for child and toddler sizes, so you can make matching beanies for the whole family. There’s nothing cuter—or cozier—than a coordinated set of handmade hats!
