The Windham Scarf was one of the very first crochet scarf patterns I created. I wanted something simple that would keep the wearer warm during our famous New England winters but not add to the bulk of what we were already wearing, so I designed it with the keyhole feature.

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know I love a good keyhole scarf! I have designed 9 so far with more on the way!

The Yarn!

Sadly, the yarn I originally used has been discontinued. It was a super bulky #6 boucle and was so soft and fluffy. I still miss that yarn!

I have since continued to make this scarf using Lion Brand Hometown (as shown in the photo below) or Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn. Both yarns make beautiful scarves. The scarf uses approximately 155 yards and simple stitches. Using an M/9.00 mm hook means you can complete an entire scarf in just an evening.

And if you don’t like either of my substitutions, it can also be made by holding two strands of worsted weight (#4) yarn together.

Why the Keyhole Feature?

The keyhole feature is not just a stylish addition; it’s incredibly functional. It allows the scarf to stay securely in place without constant adjustment. This is especially handy during those windy New England days when you need your scarf to stay put and keep you warm.

Crocheting Lengthwise

One unique aspect of the Windham Scarf is that it is crocheted lengthwise, instead of widthwise like most scarves. I prefer working along the long edge because I feel like I see progress on the scarf faster that way, and makes adding the keyhole feature much easier. Plus, it gives the scarf a lovely, elongated look that drapes beautifully.
